VALAAM

The Valaam Archipelago, which consists of Valaam Island and about 50 small ones, sits north of Saint-Petersburg in Lake Ladoga. The main attractions here are the unique 14th century Valaam Transfiguration Monastery witch its churches and numerous hermitages. The latter have been famous all round the country and were home to many orthodox saints and prophets. Women are still banished from some of them. Today most of the hermitages are inhabited with the clergy and Valaam is among the most venerated holies of Russia.

Kizhi Island is located 55 km northeast of the Karelian city Petrozavodsk across Lake Onega. Its main attraction is world-famous wooden Cathedral of Transfiguration - 1714 year adorned, which is under UNESCO protection.
